Qatar Petroleum (QP) announced Thursday the discovery of natural gas in the eastern Mediterranean.
The discovery was made by the Glucos-1 well, which turned out to be 133 meters of layers carrying gas. Drilling reached a depth of 4,200 meters in waters at a depth of 2,063 meters.
The company said in a statement that the exploration wells "Qlokos-1" of maritime area No. 10 located in the territorial waters of Cyprus, 180 km southwest of the port city of Limassol.
The new discovery, near Egyptian territorial waters, was carried out in cooperation between Qatar Petroleum and Exxon Mobil.
According to "Russia Today", the company has not announced the size of the natural gas reserves in the new well.
Discovery is the second group in the space of a few weeks. Qatar Petroleum and its partners, led by the French group Total, announced a major gas and condensate discovery in South Africa.
Qatar is the second largest exporter of liquefied natural gas in the world after Australia, with 77 million tons per year, and an oil producer with an average of 600,000 barrels a day.
Based on preliminary analyzes of well data, the volume of reserves in place can vary from 5 to 8 trillion cubic feet of natural gas. These estimates will be analyzed and audited in the coming months.
Commenting on the success, Saad bin Sharida Al Kaabi, Qatar's Managing Director and General Manager, said: "This discovery is the second of its kind to be announced this month in Qatar Petroleum's international projects."
