The Milky Way thinks its weight can erode? New research reveals

A group of scientists discovered the weight of the Milky Way by applying a series of mathematical measurements to our galaxy to determine its true size: it is thought that it weighs 1.5 trillion suns and reaches 256,000 light-years .

The Milky Way Discovery project is the fruit of an international collaboration between scientists working for the US NASA space agency and ESA on Hubble and Jaya telescopes, according to the Daily Mail website.

The researchers calculated the correct weight of the galaxy by collecting data from 46 spherical clusters and hundreds of thousands of stars orbiting the center of the Milky Way, of which thirty-four came from Jaya and several dozen Hubble.

"We were fortunate to have a large dataset," said Roland van der Maril, of the Institute of Space Telescope Sciences in the United States. "By combining Gaia's measurements with those of Hubble, we can determine the mass of the Milky Way in an impossible way without these two space telescopes for them."
