According to the new guidelines, it is no longer recommended to use a low daily dose of aspirin to prevent a heart attack or stroke in most adults.
After decades of doctors thinking that taking 75 to 100 mg of aspirin a day could prevent cardiovascular problems, the American College of Cardiology and the American Heart Association have reversed this idea.
A large clinical trial concluded that low-dose daily aspirin had no effect on increasing the age of healthy older adults, but that this drug was associated with significant bleeding.
According to recommendations released on Sunday, low-dose aspirin should not be prescribed to prevent cardiovascular disease and atherosclerosis in adults over age 70 or adults at risk of bleeding.
