Protected Media, a company specializing in fraud detection, has discovered new scams that exploit Android devices to make huge profits without the knowledge of users.
The fraud concerns the traditional advertising bar of many free Android apps, where many video ads are piling up behind this ad. These additional ads are recorded as views, generating advertising revenue for the fraudsters, even if they are not.
This fraud causes a discharge of the phone battery, as if the user was watching multiple video ads.
This type of fraud is known as "overlay ads" and can be very profitable for fraudsters.
Protected Media CEO Asaf Greener says he found a new version of "ad aggregation" last fall and "collected tens of millions of dollars" in the delivery of these video ads every month.
In addition to the harmful consequences of these frauds on the advertising sector, it will also be a nightmare for people whose cell phone battery is exhausted for no apparent reason and whose number is unknown.
According to the Android Technology website, the fraud was attributed to an advertising technology company called Envio and many questions were raised about its involvement. But the company denied any wrongdoing, claiming that it was struggling with such activities and was misusing its platform.
However, this type of fraud does not seem completely eliminated and is difficult to fight because it is not visible to the user.
Therefore, if you think your phone is experiencing this problem and could have limited the cause of a particular application, remove it and notify the developer.
