Window on the World – Many foods can spoil the smell of the mouth and some make them very unpleasant, while others improve and make them good, but temporarily.

In an article in Express, Harold Katz said that food can be divided into three groups:

1- Foods containing sulfur: onion, garlic and curry. Most volatile sulfur compounds stay in the oral cavity with micronutrients or come from the stomach through the esophagus. This can be solved by using a toothbrush, a sugar-free chewing gum or a mouth sanitizer, but these are all temporary solutions. The reason is that the onion and garlic compounds are absorbed into the blood and that as a result of the respiratory process that involves the exchange of gases in the lungs, this smell reappears .

2 – protein substances: such as meat, legumes and dairy products. According to Dr. Katz, all these substances constitute "a favorite food source for bacteria in the human oral cavity".

The higher the protein concentration in foods, the worse the odor. Under the influence of anaerobic bacteria, the amino acids contained in the protein are transformed into volatile sulfur compounds.

3. Acidic substances and beverages: These substances negatively affect the inner membrane of the oral cavity and cause an imbalance of acid-base balance. As a result, nauseating bacteria begin to multiply rapidly.
