Russian scientists have presented a new adult TB vaccine after successfully completing the preclinical testing phase and the first stage of clinical trials.
"This year, the second phase of clinical trials will be over and we will have a new adult vaccine," said Tatyana Yakovleva, First Deputy Minister of Health, on Sunday, March 24, commemorating World TB Day.
According to statistics from the World Health Organization (WHO), tuberculosis affects each year about 10 million people, including 1 million children.
In November 2008, Veronica Skfortsova, Russian Minister of Health, referred to two anti-TB vaccines: studies have shown that they generate immunity against the disease and are not harmful to health.
The new vaccine will protect children and adults vaccinated in childhood with BCG.The new vaccine will allow adults to recover their immune memory and prevent TB.
