Arab trade ministers conclude meeting in Tunisia

The 30th Arab Ministerial Conference concluded today in Tunis its work of preparation for the economic and social agenda of the Arab Summit, to be held at the summit on March 31st.

"All the draft resolutions submitted to the council have been adopted, no project has been postponed and minor modifications have been made to certain decisions," Tunisian Minister of Commerce Omar al-Bahi told AFP. the preparatory meeting of the 30 members of the Arab Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC).

He explained that the first topic of the file economy of the meeting is a draft decision asking Arab financial institutions to support the State of Palestine in the creation of the National Foundation for Empowerment and a draft resolution on the implementation plan for the Arab Strategy for Housing and Sustainable Urban Development.

A draft resolution on the action of Arab countries in the negotiations on climate change and the fight against climate change, a draft resolution on the charter of ethics of science and technology in the Arab region and a draft resolution on the establishment of an Arab consultation center on the contribution to the investigation of marine incidents.

On the social issue of the Arab summit in Tunis, the ministers adopted a draft resolution on the Arab Strategy for Older Persons, presented by the joint meeting of the Arab Ministers of Social Affairs and Health.

They also adopted a draft resolution on the Arab Plan of Action to tackle the social causes of terrorism emanating from the Council of Arab Ministers of Social Affairs, as well as a draft resolution on the end recruitment of children into Iraqi terrorist groups.

"The meeting discussed several resolutions of the previous Arab summits on economic and social affairs, it was agreed to monitor their implementation and we will work to implement them," said Tunisian Minister of Commerce, Omar al- Bahi, Chairman of the preparatory meeting of the Economic and Social Council for the Arab Summit.

In this regard, he pointed out that in early October 2018, the Arab Commodities Regulations were adopted in the Great Arab Free Trade Area.

He added that the rules of origin are very important in trade and that they will be applied to develop trade in the Arab region.

He added that the pressure for trade between Arab countries demands transparency and guarantees that goods are already produced in Arab countries.

"The rules of origin allow us to guarantee that goods are produced in Arab countries."

He called for the adoption of exemptions in the Arab Free Zone and not to impose additional taxes on goods traded between Arab countries.

"We will work during the Tunisian presidency for the Arab Summit and the Economic and Social Council to respect the decisions taken, especially with regard to the rules of origin and the application of the Arab countries to the free zone. Arab exchange, "he said.

He stressed that the implementation of the Arab Free Trade Area presented some difficulties and that we will endeavor to overcome them.
