US President Donald Trump said Thursday that the Justice Department would look into the case of actress Josie Smollet, accused of having fabricated a hate crime in Chicago, before the police arrested him. Charges abruptly drop the case this week.
Smollet, a black actor like me, said two men attacked him on the night of January and sent him comments on racism and homophobia before looping him around his neck to shout his support for Trump.
The investigators later accused Smolet of having paid the two men to pretend to attack him in order to win the sympathy of the public.
Prosecutors dropped the charges on Tuesday and said they were adamant on Smolet, but an agreement with him waived a bailout of $ 10,000, which was a fair result.
"The Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Department of Justice will be looking into the shameful case of Jesse Smolet in Chicago," Trump said on Twitter, "which is an essential source for our country."
Smollet says that he is innocent and did not invent the attack.
