After NASA confirmed its intention to send astronauts back to the moon in 2024, it also announced plans to send humans to Mars by 2033.
NASA Director Jim Brydenstein said on Tuesday that to achieve this goal, action must be taken quickly.
"We want to land on Mars in 2033," he said at a congressional hearing. "We can prepare for the landing on Mars by preparing for the landing on the moon," he said.
NASA is seeking to implement the plans of US President Donald Trump, whose MP Mike Pence was to announce that astronauts would be sent back to the moon four years later, in 2024.
However, many experts doubt the agency's ability to carry out this task, especially given delays in the completion of Boeing's new high-powered rocket.
Because of its distance, any mission on Mars will take at least two years, and it takes six months to three days to access it alone.
A return trip to Mars can only take place when the red planet is positioned on the same side of the sun as the Earth, which happens every 26 months or so. The dates are 2031, 2033, etc.
