Russian President Vladimir Putin on Sunday sent a welcome message to the Arab summit, stressing that Russia is ready to cooperate with Arab countries in all areas.
"Gentlemen, Heads of State and Government of the League of Arab States, I am delighted to welcome you on the occasion of the opening of the summit," Putin said at the meeting. Russian news agency Sputnik, quoted in the wired text of the official Kremlin website.
Putin noted that the tense situation in many countries in the Middle East and North Africa increases the importance of the League of Arab States as a mechanism for dialogue and multilateral interaction.
The Russian president stressed the need to resolve existing crises in the region through political and diplomatic means, citing Syria as an example. "This applies entirely to Syria, where we have been able, thanks to the efforts of Russia, to inflict a fatal blow on the terrorist forces, urgent humanitarian problems".
Putin believes that in order to stabilize the situation in the region, it is necessary to resolve the long-term Arab-Israeli conflict, the outcome of which will be a fair solution to the Palestinian problem.
He recalled Russia's previous initiatives in the Middle East to form a broad anti-terrorist coalition under the auspices of the UN and to develop collective security measures and confidence in the Gulf region.
