Microsoft on Tuesday announced the launch of an initiative in conjunction with the BMW Group to create an open manufacturing platform aimed at boosting innovation and accelerating the development of "smart factories."
The announcement made by US and German companies is the second of its kind in a week after Volkswagen of Germany has cooperated with the web services of the US company AWS to connect the 122 companies in the automotive industry to improve systems and production operations.
Both of these initiatives are expected to reflect Microsoft and Amazon, the world's leading providers of cloud services, acquiring and managing huge amounts of data from the network of connected devices such as robots and sensors, IoT.
"Microsoft is collaborating with the BMW group to transform the efficiency of digital production across the industry," said Scott Guthrie, executive vice president of Microsoft Cloud + AI Group, about the company's business. alliance announced at the Hannover Messe trade fair. Microsoft explained that the platform will be built on the Microsoft Azure IIoT cloud system, already used by BMW. The reference structure is based on open source standards, an approach designed to encourage the participation of other partners.

In a statement, Microsoft said the goal was to provide an initial set of four to six partners by the end of 2019 and the deployment of 15 cases of initial use at least in the system of production. BMW already has 3,000 machines, robots and a separate transmission system connected to its own IIoT platform built on Microsoft Azure. This would contribute to an initial use of the project.
