Mozambique, hit by floods, Wednesday launched a mass vaccination campaign against cholera, with more than 1,700 registered cases.
The Mozambican Ministry of Health recorded Wednesday 1741 cases and two deaths, against 1428 cases yesterday and most cases in the city of Pera.
The campaign targeting 900,000 people began Wednesday in Suvala province, home to the worst-hit city of Pera, the ministry said in a statement.
The water-based cholera vaccination campaign is expected to continue until 9 April and will cover the provinces of Dundo, Nhamanda and Buzi.
"Hundreds of thousands of people live in difficult conditions in temporary shelters, have limited access to drinking water and sanitation services and are exposed to cholera and other diseases" said Jamila Cabral, representative of the World Health Organization (WHO).
Hurricane Idai struck Mozambique, Malawi and Zimbabwe on March 15 and flooded vast areas, particularly Mozambique, following heavy rains.
According to Mozambican official statistics, the number of victims of the cyclone has increased to 598.
