The Arab League has condemned the opening of a commercial office in the occupied city of Jerusalem, described as a bad step.
"The opening of a commercial office in Jerusalem during the Brazilian president's visit to Israel represents a reaction to the Brazilian position and a negative message to the Arab world," said Mahmoud Afifi, spokesman for the secretary-general. from the university, Ahmed Aboul Gheit.
"The opening of representative offices in occupied Jerusalem does not serve peace efforts," Afifi said in a statement. "This approach constitutes a clear violation of the principles of international law that consider Jerusalem as an occupied territory, and prohibits the transfer of embassies or representative offices, trade negotiations before settling their status through negotiations between the parties Palestinian and Israeli.
"This action by Brazil is a step in the wrong direction and will not necessarily lead to the development of Arab-Brazilian relations," said Aboul Gheit.
Afifi added that since the presidency of President Paulsonaro, Brazilian positions have been monitored and studied by the Arab League. Which in the past was based on respect for the principles of international law and the promotion of the legitimate rights of Palestinians, thus creating a solid foundation for strong relations between the Arab world and Brazil.
The spokesman expressed the hope that the Brazilian administration would manage its approaches wisely in the next stage and carefully study the consequences on its relations with the Arab world, peoples and governments.
On March 31, the Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced the opening of a commercial office in Jerusalem after the denunciation by the Palestinians and the announcement by the Palestinian Foreign Ministry to recall its ambassador to the Brazil for consultation.
The announcement made by Brazil took place at a meeting between Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Brazilian President Javier Paulsonaro, who visited Israel a few days ago.
