In an attempt to end the controversy, the UK Department of Health conducted a video-cassette experiment to determine the devastating effects of smoking on the body compared to the use of electronic cigarettes. The experiment simulated the effects of inhaling tobacco smoke, electronic cigarettes and normal air into the lungs, represented by three grooves filled with pieces of cotton, each pot being connected to a pump, one representing cigarette and the other, inhalation by the non-smoker.
At the end of the experiment, the cotton in the tobacco pot became brown, as well as the inside of the pot and the air stuck in the tube containing the tar, the electronic cigarette pot remaining practically unchanged.
Professor John Newton, director of health development at the ministry, said the experiment visually illustrated the stark contrast between the effects of regular smoking and electronic smoking, explaining that the impact of electronic smoking was at its peak. 95% less than normal smoking.
He pointed out that the ministry wanted to encourage more smokers to try to stop smoking altogether by using an electronic cigarette or to use another alternative to nicotine.
