WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Researchers have discovered a strange idea to design an unusual type of space elevator based on a "cable" connecting the moon to a home station in Earth orbit.
The space elevator can carry astronauts and cargo carried on the orbital roadway to the moon in a solar powered 'lift cabin'. The use of the "space line", the rocket fuel needed to perform the Earth-Moon flight, could be reduced by a third.
However, the ride in the elevator can take several days or even weeks, which means that it is necessary to support the humans inside the space vehicles during the long ride.

The traditional concept of a space elevator is a cable that connects the Earth directly to a point above it, extending beyond the orbit of the planet. But, for the moment, a cable is not strong enough to support its own weight.
In collaboration with Emily Sandford of Columbia University in New York, astrophysicist Zephyr Pinoyer proposes to build the elevator in the opposite direction, from orbit to the moon.
The only drawback of the concept of a space lift is that it takes a lot more time because the ride in the "lift vehicle" can take several days.
Building a separation line of spaces would be a major technical challenge, going beyond the current human capabilities, the researchers wrote.
The complete results of the study are being prepared for submission to the journal Acta Astronautica.
