The Hiabusa 2 was launched Friday on the surface of the asteroid "Ryugo" in order to make a hole and collect dust to allow the study of the surface of the space object .
The projectile exploded as planned 40 minutes after the launch of the vehicle on Ryugo.
The collision with the asteroid has already occurred, said at a press conference Yoshi Tsuda, head of the Japanese space agency JAXA.
At the same time, a camera was configured to collect images of the programmed explosion, while the vehicle was moving away to avoid damage.
The agency said the vehicle was operating normally in time for the explosion.
This was one of the most dangerous missions of the long flight Hayabusa 2 which allowed to collect valuable information on the asteroid "Ryugu" that could help better understand our solar system.
The vehicle is expected to return two weeks later to approach Ryugu and land briefly in the new pit.
The diameter of the artificial hole can be 10 meters if the surface is sandy and only three meters if it is rocky, according to scientists from the Japanese Space Agency.
The Japanese Hiabusa 2 mission was launched from the Tanjashima Space Center in southern Japan in December 2014 and arrived near the asteroid in June. He should return to Earth with samples in 2020.
