Brazilian football legend Pelé is still in intensive care but is recovering satisfactorily after undergoing surgery to remove a colon polyp, his doctors said on Friday.
Pelé’s medical team at the Albert Einstein Hospital in São Paulo said he “is actively speaking and showing vital signs within a normal range”.
“My friends, with each passing day I feel a little better,” Pelé, 80, said on Instagram. “I can’t wait to play again, but I’m still recovering for a few days.”
“While I am here I take this opportunity to chat a lot with my family and to rest. Thanks again for all the messages of sympathy. We will be together again.”
The tumor was discovered during routine heart, blood vessel and lab tests performed by Pelé, and he immediately underwent surgery to remove it last Saturday.
The health of Pelé, real name Edson Arantes do Nascimento, has deteriorated in recent years, and he has been hospitalized several times, the last in April 2019 in Paris, due to an acute urinary tract infection.
Upon his return to Brazil, a kidney stone was removed.
Pelé suffered in November 2014 from an acute urinary tract infection, which required him to enter the intensive care room and undergo dialysis, amid great concern around the world over the possibility of the death of the player, which is one of the most important in history. .
Pelé has only had one kidney since he started playing. A rib fracture during a match damaged his right kidney, which was eventually removed.
In 2016, Pelé was due to light the torch at the Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, but he also had to miss the party for health reasons.
He also suffers from thigh problems. In February 2020, Pele reassured his fans about his sanity, after his son Edinho said he was “isolated” and suffered from “some type of depression”.
Pelé, the only player in history to win the World Cup three times (1958, 1962 and 1970), scored 77 goals in 92 appearances for the “Celeção” shirt before retiring in 1977. He was chosen in 1999 by the International Olympic Committee, as one of the best athletes of the 20th century, then in a year as the best player of the century by the International Football Federation “FIFA”.
He is considered by many to be the greatest soccer player of all time.
