A new report confirms that Instagram is working on a new stand-alone chat application called "Instagram Threads".

Two years ago, Instagram launched a separate email application called Direct. Instagram already has a live chat feature included in the Instagram app itself, but decided that this feature requires a stand-alone application. However, it is not a good idea to encourage the company to dispose of it earlier this year.

Apparently, this is not the end of Instagram's ambitions in the field of chat applications. According to a new report from The Verge, Instagram seems to be working on a new stand-alone chat application called " The sons ". It will be an improved version of Direct that will allow users to share more items, including location, speed of movement and even battery life.

According to The Verge, this seems like a way for Instagram to try to compete with Snapchat and allow its users to spend more time inside the app. Apparently, the average Snapchat user spends more time using Snapchat than the average Instagram user, and Instagram seems hoping that creating an email application designed to be used by close friends will change that.

However, Instagram has never been considered a courier service. It focuses mainly on sharing photos. So we do not know if users can see Instagram as something else. The company declined to comment on the report, but the application would have been tested internally on Facebook, but it remains to be seen whether it will be officially launched.
