Under the title “The mental health of the Lebanese during the Corona pandemic (Covid-19) in the light of certain demographic variables”, the Arab Journal of Scientific Publishing (AJSP) published in its twenty-fifth issue a study which is the first of its kind in the Arab world, particularly in Lebanon, submitted by the research team An initiative of We Haddak, the author of Professor Rasha Tammouri, and the two psychologists Reem Fawaz and Hussein Himmeh.

The study attempted to determine the mental health level of the Lebanese during the Corona crisis and to identify the most important mental disorders that emerged as a result of this epidemic in the light of certain demographic variables such as gender, age, economic level and level of education, and a descriptive comparative survey approach was adopted to achieve this goal. The study sample consisted of (2347) individuals from different Lebanese governorates, their ages ranging from (13-84) years. Symptom Checklist-90 was used, which measures physical symptoms, obsessive-compulsive disorder, depression, anxiety, hostility, and psychosis.

It was stated in the study that since the end of the year (2019), the world is facing a global health crisis as the coronavirus (COVID-19) has become a health threatening epidemic. Attention has been paid to the state of physical health, as it is most important in the beginning, and many have overlooked the psychological state of individuals and its role in improving immunity, both mental and physical. The Corona virus pandemic and social divergence have changed the way individuals interact, and with the virus spreading widely in all countries and in the absence of any confirmed vaccines or drugs, issues with the virus, with its prevention and its treatment are still of concern today, with the emergence of the infection and the application of quarantine. At home, there was a need to move on to thinking about mental health issues, and researching mental distress and the risk of depression.

According to the curators of the study, specialist studies on the Corona virus and its impact on mental health are considered scarce, as there is no data on this topic, and this is what prompted the setting. implementation of the present study to discover the most important psychological problems that can appear in individuals while determining their level, especially since The crisis It is necessary, as specialists in psychology, to contribute to the level of mental health in Lebanese society, to take appropriate preventive and corrective measures before the problems worsen. Based on the above, the importance of scientific study appears in that it is considered to be the first of its kind – within the limits of knowledge and understanding – to concern itself with the field of determining the level of mental health and the identification of the most important psychological problems suffered by members of Lebanese society in light of the spread of the Corona virus.

The results showed that the Lebanese enjoy a high degree of mental health, despite the Corona pandemic and despite the stone, and the issue can be explained in light of the crises that the Lebanese are going through, the Lebanese society being subjected for many years of numerous wars, crises, changes in pressure and various and continuous pressures, starting with political and security crises. The continued progress, through the October 17 revolution, towards the bitter economic crisis and the August 4 explosion, which made it unstable in all political, security, social and economic aspects, as the accumulation of pressures on the Lebanese made him a strong personality who endures hardships and distress, and seeks to come to terms with various circumstances.

It also turns out that the youngest are the most affected psychologically than adults, and this is to be expected, because with the closure of schools and universities and the cancellation of all recreational activities, many teens are missing out on some of the moments. most important of their life and are deprived of daily pleasure and have become doubtful about the fate of their future.

The results showed that women are the most affected psychologically, and perhaps the reason is that women suffer in light of the stay of all family members at home and the physical burdens and psychological pressures that. result.

The results also revealed that the mental health level of singles is lower than that of married people. Unmarried people exhibit psychological symptoms that are not displayed by married people, especially since a single life increases the risk of mental illnesses such as anxiety and depression.

It was found that Lebanese with middle education level suffer more symptoms and have lower levels of mental health compared to those with university education level. It should be noted that there is a close relationship between education level and employment status on the one hand, and economic level on the other.

The results revealed that Lebanese with lower economic level suffer from lower levels of mental health compared to those with higher economic level. As the pandemic led to economic recession, it affected the ability to pay for basic necessities such as food, heat or rent, and the use of most personal savings and even loans. There is no doubt that the situation in Lebanon is somewhat complicated, as the Corona crisis coincided with the loss of the Lebanese pound of more than half of its value against the dollar at the start of the epidemic period, this which caused an increase in the prices of most food, medicine and medical supplies, which placed an additional burden on the Lebanese citizen. . It was therefore natural that the results showed a relationship between low economic status and poor mental health. In the same context, the unemployed had lower levels of mental health than those of employees.
