US billionaire Jeff Bezos released a video clip on Tuesday showing the first moments of weightlessness inside the “Blue Origin” capsule during its successful space flight.
During the short 33-minute clip, which Bezos posted to his Instagram account, the flight crew appeared to be in a state of delight as soon as the capsule hit space.
There was a state of laughter inside the capsule during the weightlessness phase, as soon as the passengers in the capsule began to automatically rise from their seats.
The “New Shepard” missile, carrying the capsule that carried four passengers, was launched Tuesday afternoon from an isolated location in the West Texas desert, 40 kilometers from the town of Van Horn.
Along with Jeff Bezos, his brother Mark and aviation pioneer Wally Funk, 82, and Blue Origin’s first customer, Dutchman Oliver Damon, 18, traveled, making the latter the oldest and youngest. all-time astronaut.
The New Shepard took off into space at three times the speed of sound using an engine running on liquid hydrogen and oxygen, which means zero carbon emissions.
Then the capsule separated from the rocket, and the new astronauts spent a few minutes at 107 km altitude, beyond the Karman Line (100 km altitude), internationally recognized as the border between Earth and the spatial spheres.
Astronauts were able to gaze at the deep blue and black planet encamped over the rest of the universe from large windows that make up a third of the cabin space. “It’s all black in here,” Funk said, according to the capsule’s live audio stream.
After a few minutes of weightless testing, the capsule descended in free fall before deploying three massive parachutes to descend gently into the desert after a flight of about ten minutes.
As they left the capsule, the four passengers, who were in great shape, were greeted with cheers from the Blue Origin crews, with Jeff Bezos wearing a cowboy hat.
Bezos created Blue Origin in 2000, with the ambition of one day being able to build floating space colonies with artificial gravity, where millions of people could work and live.
The company is currently working on the development of a high thrust orbital rocket called “New Glen”, as well as a moon landing module, hoping to land a contract with the US space agency and its Artemis program, which would allow it to become the main private sector partner for NASA.
