The meetings of the General Assembly of the Arab Water Council will be held in Cairo on March 16 with the participation of representatives from 25 Arab countries.

Mr. Mahmoud Abu Zeid, President of the Arab Water Council and former Minister of Irrigation, said that at the General Assembly, the elections of the "Board of Governors" would stand for the 2019-2021, which includes 45 seats, of which 20 will be directly elected, 22 seats will be nominated according to their candidacy. The Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation, Mohamed Abdel Aati, several Arab ministers, more than 400 members of the council, representatives of Arab governments, ambassadors , representatives of diplomatic missions in Cairo, representatives of regional and international organizations, civil society, civil society organizations, public figures, writers, intellectuals and media professionals.

He added that during the meetings, a number of main themes and sub-themes will be discussed for the work plan of the Arab Water Council, in line with the priorities and recommendations adopted by the fourth forum. of Arab water held in Cairo last November and the preparation of the Fifth Arab Water Forum, Objectives of Water Security and Sustainable Development in the Arab Region.

It will also review the decisions taken at the previous General Assembly, including the promotion of cooperation and durable solutions for sharing water resources, as well as the development of Arab capacity in the field of water, promoting dialogue and exchange of experiences and implementing specialized training programs (water diplomacy, negotiation techniques and mechanisms). Establish an Arab network for the exchange of knowledge among Arab riparian countries in shared river basins and establish a think tank to resolve conflicts and strengthen cooperation in the management of shared water resources among Arab countries.

Dr. Abu Zaid stated that the members of the Board of Governors will participate in developing the Board's strategies and work plan for the next three years (2019-2021) through three working groups, namely: the task force to reactivate the role of members and to revitalize members and ensure sustainable funding for Council activities and programs, for the preparation and implementation of the Council's and the Council's substantive programs and activities; working group in charge of the preparation of forums and conferences.

For his part, Mr. Hussein Al-Atfi, Secretary General of the Arab Water Council and former Minister of Irrigation, said that the Governing Council is the supreme organ of the Arab Council of water and that it is responsible for defining the detailed policies of the Council and making organizational and executive decisions to ensure the proper functioning of the latter. And its members are elected every three years.

He added that during the General Assembly, three important technical sessions would be held: the first on the indicators of the water situation in the Arab region and its relations with sustainable development, and the second on the use of modern technologies and remote sensing techniques in the management of water resources for sustainable agriculture, in cooperation with the Arab Council for Water and the World Bank.

The third session will review the main results of the International Hydrological Program for Groundwater and Arid Water in cooperation with UNESCO and the latest of the Arab Water Council's program to support regional efforts to develop the use of unconventional water to cope with the shortage of water and meet the growing needs due to population growth.

He pointed out that the thirteenth meeting of the initiative on the links between climate change and its relations with sustainable development and food and water security and social fragility in the Arab countries, stressed the signing of the report. agreements in this respect.
