Brussels announced that it would change its strategy for the early vaccination campaign against Covid-19 to reduce its dependence on the “AstraZeneca” vaccine, after the producer failed in its commitment to deliver the agreed doses.
The head of the European Commission’s health department, Sandra Galina, told the European Parliament on Monday that the Anglo-Swedish company had only guaranteed delivery of 25% of the more than 100 million doses it had promised to the European Union.

She added that “AstraZeneca would have been a mass vaccine for the first quarter”, ie the first three months of 2021, but considered the inability of “AstraZeneca” to deliver the quantities stipulated in the contract. “a problem for all member states.”
“If we don’t get the vaccine, you won’t get the money from UNHCR,” Galina warned the company.
She pointed out that the Commission is currently studying vaccines manufactured by “Biontech-Pfizer” and “Johnson & Johnson” to bridge the gap.
She said: “There will be more quantities in the second quarter, because a new contract will come into effect. So, we will not only have Biontec and our manager, but rather with a new contract, which means that the quantities will double.”
Galina stressed the possibility of stepping up production of “Pfizer-Biontech” vaccines, using the facilities of other pharmaceutical companies, such as the French company “Sanofi”, whose special vaccine against Covid-19 is facing obstacles.
