South African Football Federation spokesman Dominique Chimhavi told AFP on Thursday that his country had officially asked to participate in the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon.
"We have submitted the required documents and it is up to the African Union to make a decision" on which country will host the 2019 release, Chimhavi said.
South Africa has become the second country after Egypt to apply for a bid, which will close Friday at 22:00 GMT, with the country's identity being unveiled on Jan. 9.
The Egyptian federation announced yesterday that it had officially submitted its bid to host the day after the withdrawal of the race after Morocco withdrew from the race after appointing the press to organize the tournament for the first time since 1988 .
The African Union (AU) announced on November 30 the withdrawal of the Cameroon organization due to the delay in the completion of infrastructure and stadium facilities, as well as instability security in some areas.
Last week, South Africa expressed its "desire" to host the Nations Cup for the second time in six years, but did not even accede to the official request to host the tournament. If it is selected, it will be the third time that another country is replaced after the 1996 versions (instead of Kenya after the latter has refrained from doing so due to financial difficulties ) and in 2013 (instead of Libya).
South Africa is one of the most developed countries in the continent in organizing major football tournaments, especially as it has become the only country on the continent to host the World Cup in 2010.
