South African Football Federation (DFA) spokesman Dominique Chimhavi told AFP on Thursday that his country had officially called for the 2019 Nations Africa Cup in Cameroon.
"We have submitted the required documents and it is up to the African Union to decide," he said.
South Africa became the second country after Egypt to apply for a host. The bid will be closed on Friday at 22:00 GMT, the country's identity being unveiled on 9 January.
The Egyptian federation said earlier in the day that it had formally submitted its application for the reception the day after Morocco withdrew after press appointments of press releases organizing the tournament for the first time since 1988.
The Africa Confederation Cup (CA) announced on November 30 the withdrawal of the Cameroon organization due to the delay in the completion of stadium infrastructure and facilities, as well as the situation disturbed in some areas.
Last week, South Africa expressed its "desire" to host the Nations Cup for the second time in six years, but has yet to formally request the organization of the tournament. The latter has decreased due to financial difficulties (and in 2013 instead of Libya).
South Africa is one of the most developed countries in the continent in organizing major football tournaments, especially as it has become the only country on the continent to host the World Cup in 2010.
