The US Space Agency (NASA) is just days away from the previous space invasion when the New Horizons spacecraft spends New Year's Day near the farthest probe explored by humans at the ends of the solar system.
Scientists call this frozen object Ultima Thol, the size of Washington, six to 400 million kilometers from Earth, in the Kuiper belt that surrounds the solar system.
The probe should reach a minimum distance of 5.33 GMT on January 1, a few days later. Until then, the form of the offense subsists and its composition of scientific mysteries.
Because it is very far from the sun and frozen, its composition is still the same since its formation. Scientists consider it as a living witness to the birth of the solar system four billion and 500 million years ago. Scientists will rediscover it until then, said Alan Stern, one of the leaders of the mission.
The probe carries a camera that focuses its lens on the surface of the object to obtain images allowing scientists to understand its shape and determine whether it is one or more sections.
"We have not seen anything like it yet," said Kelsey Singer, Mission Manager.
The arrival of images and information from the probe on Earth requires six hours and eight minutes. It will fly only 3,500 kilometers from the offensive on January 1 st.
Scientists are eagerly awaiting the images that will come back.
The New Horizons started off the Earth in 2006, probing the solar system up to the planet Pluto and sending images of its surface in a breathless manner in 2015, then moving 51,000 kilometers to the planet. Hour towards the confines of the solar system.
