The European Union fined 1.49 billion euros to Google in the context of advertising practices

The European Commission has fined Google a billion euros ($ 1.7 billion) for violating European competition rules by taking advantage of its dominant position by broadcasting Adsense ads.

"Google has strengthened its dominant position in search-related advertising and has moved away from competitive pressure," said Margaret Vistager, European Commissioner for Competition, citing contractual restrictions on third-party sites.

"It's illegal under European antitrust rules," she said in a statement, adding that the misconduct has persisted for more than a decade, depriving other companies of the opportunity to compete.

Adsense for Google allows advertisers to place ads on newspaper and blog sites. When users search the site, ads appear in the margins.
