Researchers from the British University of Surrey have come up with a new artificial intelligence system capable of predicting the symptoms and severity of cancer patients during a patient's treatment trip, allowing so doctors start treating these symptoms early.
In the first study of this type, members of the research team explained that they had developed two artificial intelligence systems capable of accurately predicting three common symptoms in cancer patients: depression, stress and sleep disorders.
These three symptoms are associated with a marked deterioration in the quality of life of the cancer patient. During this study, the team analyzed the data already available on the symptoms of cancer patients in the radiotherapy phase.
The team relied on data spanning different time periods to determine whether the algorithms on which the artificial intelligence system is based can actually predict the onset of these symptoms or their emergence from the baseline.
The study, conducted in collaboration with the University of Surrey and California, San Francisco, showed that the results of the artificial intelligence system were very close to the actual symptoms that occurred in patients.
"These exciting results show that artificial intelligence techniques have a real chance to make a difference for people with cancer," said Bryan Barnage, a researcher at Rayyan University, professor of psychology. artificial intelligence at the University of Surrey. Help doctors identify the patients most likely to develop symptoms, and help them develop proactive treatment plans to cope with and overcome these symptoms.
