Amazon has apologized to some US politicians for denying that some of its drivers are sometimes forced to pee in plastic bottles.
Mark Buchan, Democratic member of the US Congress, tweeted that Amazon “lets its workers urinate in empty water bottles.”
The official account of e-commerce giant Amazon responded to the tweet saying, “If this is true, then no one will work for us.”
But the company has apologized for its denials of what the congressman said after evidence emerged on the internet that Amazon drivers sometimes have to.
Amazon said: “We owe our apologies to Congressman Buchan,” pointing out that “the tweet was incorrect, did not take into account the large number of drivers who work for us and only focused on our fulfillment centers.”
“Our implementation centers have dozens of toilets for employees to use, and you can try it out yourself at any time,” she added.
Buchan also criticized Amazon for not allowing employees to form a union at one of its main branches in Alabama.
He said, “That doesn’t mean you pay workers $ 15 an hour that you are a ‘progressive company’ when you ban union formation and force workers to urinate in water bottles.”
Amazon’s official account responded to the tweet saying, “Do you really believe the Order to Pee Bottles? If that’s true, then no one will work for us.”
Several media outlets cited Amazon employees as confirming that they had to urinate in plastic bottles because they had no other options while they were working. They also highlighted uncompromising working practices both at the level of the execution centers and at the level of delivery drivers.
The Intercept said it had documents confirming that Amazon executives were aware of what was going on.
And Amazon said, after refusing to deny what the congressman said: “We know that drivers have problems accessing toilets due to traffic, and sometimes on rural roads, especially afterwards. the spread of the Corona virus, which has led to the closure of most public toilets. “
She added that “the problem has been around for a long time and the sector suffers completely from it”, expressing her willingness to resolve it.
Cobain dismissed Amazon’s apology, saying, “It’s not about me at all, it’s about your employees receiving treatment from you that does not have enough respect and dignity. by recognizing that your working conditions are not suitable for all workers, then set that for everyone. Finally, let them. Create unions without your intervention. “
Last week saw a historic vote by Amazon workers in Bismere, Alabama, to represent the association of retail, wholesale and department stores in their stead. But these efforts have met opposition from the e-commerce giant.
The results of this vote will not appear until next week. If so, this would be the first consortium to represent Amazon workers in the United States.
Amazon has resisted efforts to form unions in the United States, despite the presence of such unions at branches and facilities of the company operating in Europe.
