Amnesty calls on Egypt to investigate the death of an inmate

Amnesty International on Friday urged the Egyptian authorities to "promptly carry out a thorough, independent and impartial investigation" into the death of an inmate under the pretext of torture.

The organization said in a statement that Hossam Hamid, 30, had spent in Scorpio prison, referring to statements from "sources close to the incident", that he was physically assaulted at several times by guards while he was placed in solitary confinement in a disciplinary cell.

The sources told him that "for several days he was heard screaming and knocking on the door with force, and everything was stopped. When the guards opened the door, they found him dead in his cell and his face was swollen, wounded and stained with blood. "

Since Hamid was transferred to Scorpion Prison six months ago, he has not been allowed to receive visits from his family, Amnesty said.

Since July 2019, at least three detainees have died in Egyptian prisons, accused of lack of health care, ill-treatment and torture.
