According to a recent French study, Paris-Botox injections, widely used in cosmetic surgery, constitute a safe and effective treatment to reduce migraine attacks.
The study was conducted by researchers at the Rangel University Hospital in France, and published their findings in the latest issue of the scientific journal "Plastic Serger".
The team investigated the effectiveness of botulinum toxin injection, known as Botox, and has been used for many years in cosmetic surgery and in treating the symptoms of aging.
In 2010, the Food and Drug Administration approved the use of Botox injections to treat chronic migraines and since then, an increasing number of patients have reported successful treatment aimed at reducing migraines.
To access the new study, the team analyzed data from 17 previous studies, including 3,650 migraine patients, including 1550 chronic migraine sufferers, with at least 15 episodes of headache per month for 3 months.
The researchers found that Botox injections significantly reduced the frequency of chronic migraine attacks within 3 months of injection, compared with the placebo group.
The improvement was evident within two months of starting treatment and, in order to maintain the effectiveness of the treatment, Botox injections are usually repeated every three months.
