The German Vaccine Committee, known as “Stico”, cited studies showing a “significantly superior” immune response of a combination of AstraZeneca with a second dose of the messenger RNA vaccine compared to two doses of AstraZeneca.
In a draft recommendation, Thursday, the committee asked for a delay of at least 4 weeks between the two doses.
Germany uses the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines, which are part of the “Mersal Rana” vaccines.
In April, German authorities decided that people under the age of 60 who received the first dose of the AstraZeneca vaccine should, as a rule, receive the second dose of the messenger RNA vaccine.
The decision came after the AstraZeneca vaccine was linked to an extremely rare blood clot.
