One of the new features recently acquired by Apple Watch is the Walkie-Talkie feature, which allows Apple Watch users to communicate with each other through the watch, by simply pressing a button. Apparently, Apple was working on a feature similar to the iPhone, which would have allowed iPhone users to communicate with each other even without cellular coverage.
We say "it was" because, according to a report from The Information, Apple seems to have abandoned its plan to include this feature in its smartphones. According to the report, Apple would work with Intel on the project. The reason for the suspension was that the Apple CEO, at the head of the project, Mr. Rubén Caballero, had left the company earlier this year.
This project also included the use of Intel's modem chips and, with Apple's acquisition of the Intel Modem Division earlier this year, these plans may have been improved. . However, if the feature is implemented successfully, it will allow users to communicate with each other on the 900 MHz radio spectrum. This feature is different from the walkie-talkie feature available on the Apple Watch which relies on WiFi or cellular connectivity. There is no information as to whether Apple plans to re-enable this feature in the future, but for now, do not expect to see this feature on this year's iPhone.
