Authorities in Italy have fined Apple € 10 million for making misleading claims about the water resistance of certain iPhones.
The Italian National Competition Authority found that Apple’s claims do not include natural conditions because the device’s water resistance claims were only valid with pure water during laboratory experiments.
The authority said Apple does not cover water damage in its hardware warranty.
And Apple has claimed in its ads that some iPhones can withstand water to a depth of 4 meters for 30 minutes.
However, the authorities considered that the need for specific circumstances had not been clarified.
So he ruled that the ad, which showed iPhones touching water, was misleading.
Apple has long advised against carrying iPhones while swimming or showering, and said the hardware warranty does not cover damage caused by liquids.
But Italian authorities also ruled that the lack of warranty coverage for water damage violated Articles 24 and 25 of the Consumer Law.
The Autorité de la concurrence objected to the fact that the guarantee did not apply to an item that is heavily marketed as part of these devices.
Apple was fined € 5 million for each of the violations.
The company did not respond to a request for comment.
