London, UK (CNN) – Pharmaceutical giant AstraZeneca on Thursday said patient safety was the “top priority” after several European countries suspended use of their coronavirus vaccine.
“Patient safety is the company’s top priority. Regulators have clear and strict efficacy and safety criteria for the approval of any new drug, including the AstraZeneca vaccine,” AstraZeneca said in a statement. .
The company added that “the safety of the vaccine has been studied extensively in the third phase of clinical trials, and peer-reviewed data confirms that the vaccine is generally well tolerated.”
Iceland, Norway and Denmark said Thursday they had stopped all uses of the AstraZeneca vaccine as they were investigating reports of blood clots in some vaccinated patients.
Several other European countries have suspended the use of specific lots of AstraZeneca vaccine.
