Today, Sunday, the sky of the globe witnesses the phenomenon of the completion of the full moon of the month of Muharram, and its brightness reaches 99.7%, and it is called the “blue moon” as the third full moon. out of four during the summer season in the northern hemisphere, but it will not appear blue in the sky.

Dr Ashraf Shaker, head of the astronomical department at the National Institute for Astronomical and Geophysical Research, said in a statement to the Middle East News Agency on Sunday that the moon will reach the stage of completion at two and two minutes into the evening of today and will have cut off half of its orbit around Earth during that month.

He explained that it will be visible alongside the planets Saturn and Jupiter, even before sunrise at dawn the next day, pointing out that the August full moon is known to American tribes as (the sturgeon moon ) because this time of year makes it easier to fish for large sturgeon in the Great Lakes.

For his part, Engineer Majed Abu Zahira, president of the Jeddah Astronomical Society, said in a statement released today that after darkening the night, the full moon will be observed next to Jupiter. , which will appear as a bright white light spot. to the naked eye in conjunction and they will accompany you all night long.

Regarding the reason for calling it the (blue moon), he explained that it is called a monthly or seasonal moon. The monthly blue moon is called the second full moon when it occurs in the same month in the Gregorian calendar, or the seasonal blue moon. moon – which is the third full moon of any of the seasons which includes four Badr moons.

He added that astronomy defines the season as the period of time between the solstice and the equinox, or vice versa, and each season – winter, spring, summer or fall – lasts three months and usually has three full moons, with an interval of about 30 days, and since the full moon lasts for a month, last June came a few days after the summer solstice, so we will see four full moons this summer, which will end with the autumnal equinox of next September.

He said the third full moon – the seasonal blue moon – will appear today, Sunday, but it will not be blue. This will be caused by atmospheric conditions, including water droplets in the air or certain types of clouds, or particles ejected into the atmosphere is also due to volcanic ash and smoke.Blue moons are also created in images using special blue filters for cameras or in image processing software.

He pointed out that in general, the designation of blue moons is issued every 2-3 years, as the last blue moon was on October 31, 2020 – coinciding with the meeting of Mars at that time, and coincidentally, the This year’s blue moon will appear near planets again, but this time Jupiter and Saturn will use the blue moon designation again in August 2023.
