The Australian Football Federation (FFA) stepped up its campaign to release a imprisoned Bahraini refugee in Thailand, Hakim Oreibi, and donated $ 10,000 ($ 7,263) to launch a support campaign upon his return to Australia.

Oreibi was arrested in Thailand in November at the request of the Bahraini government, which was sentenced Monday by a court in Bangkok for a further two-month sentence, pending a hearing on his extradition to take place.

According to Reuters, "called on the Australian Football Federation, the Australian Government, FIFA and the Association of Professional Football Players to release this Ureybi, who said he feared for his safety when he was sent back to Bahrain .

"Hakim Oreibi is a permanent resident of Australia and plays for Pasco Phil," said Australian Football Federation director David Gallup in a statement released on Tuesday.

"After careful action, the Australian government has decided to grant him refugee status and it is an inherent human right that must be protected," he said.

"Hakeem reached another level earlier this week, calling more and more fans and players to release Hakim in Australia and around the world," Gallup said.

Oreibi fled Bahrain in 2014 and obtained permanent resident status in Australia. He joined the Pasco Valley football team in Melbourne. He was arrested on the orders of the international police at the request of Bahrain, before the memo was later canceled.

New York-based Human Rights Watch said Oreibi was tortured by the Bahraini authorities for his brother's political activities during the 2011 Arab Spring uprising, a charge denied by the Bahraini authorities.

Oreibi was found guilty of vandalizing a police station in Bahrain and sentenced in absentia to 10 years' imprisonment, accusation denied by Ureybi, confirming that he was playing a game broadcast on television at moment of vandalism.
