In its first commentary on the release of Hakim Oreibi, a Bahraini footballer arrested at the request of Manama, the Bahraini Foreign Ministry confirmed his right to sue him.
In a statement obtained by the Reuters news agency, the Foreign Ministry pointed out that the sentence of ten years of imprisonment in absentia against Oreibi in 2014 was still in force, adding that Manama had the right to "take all necessary legal measures against him".
The Thai authorities had previously released the 25-year-old, who has been a refugee in Australia since 2014 and playing in a Melbourne club, after Manama withdrew his request to deliver him.
Oreibi, accused of having participated in riots during the events of the Arab Spring in Bahrain in 2011, fled the kingdom in 2013 before his trial, denying the charges against him.
Ureybi's case echoed around the world: he was arrested by the Thai authorities at Bangkok airport last November when he was coming from Australia with his wife for a honeymoon in response to an international arrest warrant.
Oreibi said he would be tortured when he was deported to his home country and that an international campaign had been launched to ask the Thai authorities to release him.
