BERLIN (Reuters) – Bayern Munich has imposed a fine on midfielder Franck Ribery after posting annoying comments including "inappropriate words".
The 35-year-old Frenchman was responding to critics after posting a video showing him enjoying a steak covered with gold leaf.
Ribery called his detractors "hateful" and said he was not beholden to one of his "enemies".
The head of the club, Hassan Saleh Hamidzic, did not specify the amount of the fine imposed on the player, but called it a "heavy" fine.
"Frank used words that we can not accept, and he's not allowed to use it as an example and as a club player," he said.
"I spoke at length to Frank and told him that he would be liable to a hefty fine and he accepted this punishment."
The video shows Ribery sitting in the restaurant of the famous Turkish chef Nusrat Gokja in Dubai, preparing to eat a big steak, supposed to cost up to a thousand pounds ($ 1273), lying on his table.
The video has been widely criticized.
"My success is above all thanks to God, then to my honor and to my loved ones who believe in me," said Ribery in one of his tweets.
He criticized the media and said he was unaware of his charitable work.
He said he was free to spend as much as he wanted, but the manager said that Ribery was a restaurant guest, so he did not pay the bill.
Gokja has a number of fine restaurants in the United States, the Middle East and Turkey, and millions of people watch videos of him cutting meat.
This is not the first time that a celebrity is being criticized for eating in his restaurant.
Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro provoked outrage last September during his visit to the Gokja restaurant in Istanbul.
The data indicate that two-thirds of Venezuelan citizens, who are suffering from an economic crisis, are losing weight due to food shortages in recent years.
Social media users broadcast a video showing Maduro at the restaurant and opponents said he was not suffering from the problems Venezuela was facing.
