The brain is said to be one of the most complex and widely used organs and the main operating system in our body. Unfortunately, over time this operating system starts to slow down.
However, taking a specific supplement has been shown to improve one’s abilities in both verbal memory and executive function.
A new study published in the British Journal of Nutrition suggests that daily supplementation with fish oil and omega-3 fatty acids, which contain 1000 mg of DHA plus supporting nutrients, produces similar improvements in brain function to exercise in older women.
The study, conducted by researchers at the University of Bournemouth and the University of Roehampton, looked at the effects of supplementation and exercise on movement and cognitive function in older women.
The researchers identified equally significant improvements in two main measures of brain function and verbal memory and executive function.

The study looked at those who took the supplement and did not exercise, and those who did not take the supplement but exercised, compared to the placebo group, and concluded that the supplement produced similar effects on brain function than exercise.
The study included women over the age of 60 (mean age 67), and they received the supplement for 24 weeks and exercise for the past 12 weeks.
The study was led by Dr Simon Dial, senior lecturer and program coordinator for the MSc in Clinical Neuroscience at the University of Roehampton.
“We know that a lack of physical activity can be a problem for older people,” said Dial.
The supplement is scientifically formulated with omega-3 fatty acids, including docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), as well as ginkgo biloba, folic acid, vitamin B12 and phosphatidylserine .
Aging is associated with a gradual decline in cognitive and physical function, and previous research by Dr. Simon Dial suggests that supplementation improves cognition and movement in older women.
The study was funded by Efamol, essential fatty acid experts, the University of Bournemouth and the Sylvia Waddilove Trust.
DHA plays a vital role in maintaining the structure and function of your brain. In fact, it makes up about 25% of total fat and 90% of omega-3 fatty acids in your brain cells.
Another omega-3 fatty acid in fish oil, EPA, has anti-inflammatory effects that can protect the brain from damage and aging.
Taking DHA supplements has been linked to improving thinking skills, memory, and reaction times in healthy people with low DHA intake.
