Audi is promoting its latest Grandsphere concept car as a “private jet for the road”. Although the car by its nature cannot fly, the German automaker said it designed the electric car with luxury private travel in mind.

Specifically, the interior of the car has been designed so that it can transform into a “first class lounge” when the car is in autonomous mode, including the ability to stow the entire steering wheel to provide more space for the driver and the driver. front passenger.

The concept car represents what the Volkswagen-owned brand thinks it can achieve, as it focuses on electric and self-driving cars, company officials say. Audi also plans to offer electric cars exclusively by 2033 after showing off its latest new gasoline-powered cars, which are expected to be produced in 2026.

“This is the future of Audi. We are on the cusp of a new era of mobility,” Audi Sales and Marketing Manager Hildegard Wurtmann said on Thursday during the online unveiling of the car.

He added: “No car sold today is autonomous, as all current driver assistance systems still require drivers to be careful, but the Audi concept is designed to operate autonomously without driver supervision. . “

The Grand Sphere is the second of three concept cars, with the first model, called the Skysphere, revealed last month as a high-performance roadster that combines Batmobile-like technologies with aggressive design and luxurious amenities.

While the two cars share some exterior design characteristics, the Grandsphere feels less “brutal” and features a cleaner, more luxurious interior, which was Audi’s primary focus with the car.

Probably the most surprising thing about the car is the lack of clear screens in the cabin when driving in autonomous mode. Instead, everything that is normally connected through the infotainment system, including movies, is displayed on the vehicle’s wooden dashboard below the windshield.

While some of the cars that debuted included computer-generated images, an Audi spokesperson said the car was real. It will be presented at the Munich Motor Show next week.

The term “sphere” in the names of the experimental cars represents the interior space of vehicles for drivers and passengers, according to Audi. The third concept, called Urbansphere, should be unveiled in the first half of 2022.
