Portugal coach Carlos Queiroz revealed in a television interview broadcast by Fox Sports that the Qatari federation was paying for the preparation of the Iranian team to participate in the Asian Nations Cup in the UAE.
"Without the Qatar Football Federation, we could not have had training camps, friendlies, or play with Venezuela – they paid for everything," said Queiroz, who had already coached the team. Portugal in 2008. "The field and the costs of the team (…) they have paid everything because Iran has nothing, it has zero."
The Iranian team came out of the semi-finals after the defeat of the Japanese team three goals for nothing.
