NEW YORK (Reuters Health) – In a few years, cervical cancer will be a thing of the past, after the development of an effective vaccine against the disease, which affects hundreds of thousands of women around the world, reveals a new study.
The success of the cervical cancer vaccine means the disease can be eradicated in 30 years, Sky News reported on Thursday.
Scientists in Scotland have stated that routine vaccination against HPV in girls aged 12 to 13 years has resulted in a significant reduction in cancer rates and eliminated all cases.
The researchers estimated that the success of the vaccine could be repeated worldwide, meaning the possibility of completely getting rid of cervical cancer over the next three decades.
All over the UK, girls receive HPV vaccines to protect them from the cancer virus in girls. Scotland started the program in 2008.
The researchers analyzed vaccination records over the last 10 years to compare cancer rates among vaccinated and unvaccinated women.
The researchers found that routine vaccination against the cervical cancer virus reduced the incidence of the disease by 89%.
The vaccine was given at a young age of 12 and its effectiveness was close to 17 years.
