NEW YORK (Reuters Health) – Experimental contact lenses, not only improving vision, but also avoiding the itchiness caused by allergies, may soon be used, with two recent studies, the report says. In the journal Cornea, researchers wrote that lentils containing histamine, developed and tested by Johnson & Johnson, significantly attenuated the symptoms of eye allergies.
"These are very encouraging results," said Brian Pal, director of clinical sciences at Vision Care, co-author of the study. "More than 20% of people are allergic to the eyes". Both randomized trials tested the efficacy and safety of lenses slowly releasing anti-allergic Ketotifen. Some volunteers wearing antihistamine lenses have reported no itching, Pal said.
