The World Health Organization (WHO) warned today, Wednesday August 12, 2020, that the number of coronavirus cases in Lebanon could rise after half of Beirut’s health facilities were damaged by the devastating explosion which hit the port of the capital last week.
Richard Brennan, director of emergencies at the WHO Regional Office, said that after assessing 55 hospitals and health centers in Beirut, “just over 50 percent of them are out of service”. Health officials previously confirmed that three large hospitals were destroyed, while many other hospitals were badly damaged, causing them to operate at low capacity.
These developments coincide with Lebanon’s record yesterday, Tuesday, for the number of people infected with Corona, reaching 300 cases and seven deaths, bringing the total number of injured to 7,121 and deaths to 78.
In contrast, Morocco has recorded a record number of cases of Corona virus infection, with recorded cases reaching 1,499 cases in 24 hours, according to the Moroccan Ministry of Health, in addition to 23 deaths. According to today’s figures, the total number of cases in Morocco has risen to 36,600, including around 25,600 healing cases, compared to 556 deaths. Morocco is still under a health emergency, but it has relaxed its quarantine measures for a while, although it does return to tightening measures from time to time.
In Algeria, the Algerian Minister of Energy, Abdel Majid Attar, revealed that the losses of the governmental energy companies amounted to around a billion dollars due to the repercussions of the pandemic, saying that his country’s income from the Hydrocarbon exports had fallen 40% in the first half of this year compared to the same period last year, but he pointed out the existence of significant growth in domestic energy demand, around 7% per year .
Cases in Algeria reached 36,7,000, including 25,6,000 recoveries, while the death toll reached 1,333, after 11 deaths were recorded in the past 24 hours. In Jordan, Jordanian Interior Minister Salama Hammad on Wednesday decided to close the Jaber border post with Syria for a week, starting Thursday, after injuries were recorded among workers at the border center, according to what was published by the Jordanian news agency.
Jordan, one of the Arab countries least affected by the virus, has recorded 25 cases of the novel Corona virus in the past two days, most at Jaber’s border with Syria, after infections were limited to Jordanians returning from abroad and residing in quarantine places. As of Monday evening, the number of people infected with the virus in Jordan reached 1,283, 1,189 of them recovered, while the death toll reached 11.
