The hashtag # Dismissal of Minister of Higher Education was posted on social media sites in Egypt, and its users demanded the dismissal of angry Minister Khaled Abdel Ghaffar over decisions he announced on Sunday that students must going back to institutes and colleges to take exams, while the Corona virus outbreak in Egypt is still a threat to people.
What was said in the minister’s announcement?
The Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research announced the decision to resume studies and exams in universities and institutes on Saturday, February 27, based on the decision of the Supreme Committee for the management of the emerging coronavirus crisis .
Khaled Abdel Ghaffar with this statement denied what was circulating according to which examinations in universities and institutes would be replaced by research or electronic exams, and he said that only certain universities would organize electronic exams because they are equipped and able to do it and announced it before.
While the exams will take place in institutes and colleges, the minister, who sees no “convincing reason” for conducting them otherwise, announced the continuation of the “hybrid education” system, which mixes attendance at places of study and distance learning according to specific timetables.
Underestimate student life
Angered by the decisions of the Ministry of Higher Education, the minister accused the minister of underestimating the lives of students and their families in light of the danger the Corona epidemic poses to their lives.
According to them, the danger is not limited to the large number of students who congregate in institutes and colleges, but also to the large number of students who drop out of exam days and take public transport.
For his part, the minister indicated that the decision he announced “is based on a plan drawn up in cooperation with the Corona crisis management committee of the Ministry of Health”.
And the official page of the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research announced that regular meetings will be held “to check all the precautionary measures”.
Interest of students
Under the same label that calls for the minister’s dismissal against his decision, he tweeted who supported the decision and saw it as an “elevation of student interest”.
In response to the accusation of some students who reject the minister’s decision of inaction and bypassing the exams, the students said they were not afraid of the exam, but rather of the virus, because they did not ask no postponement or cancellation, rather electronic reviews.
The Corona virus continues to pose a threat to over one hundred million people in Egypt, as it is in many countries around the world.
Official statistics from the Egyptian Ministry of Health and Population show that the number of injured exceeded 173,000 and that the number of deaths was around ten thousand.
Meanwhile, watchdog organizations claim the epidemic situation in Egypt is much more dangerous than that.
The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has suspended the entry of arrivals from Egypt and the Saudi ambassador in Cairo said changing the decision was dependent on “improving the epidemiological situation” in Egypt.
