WASHINGTON (Reuters) – US and European sensors have taken pictures suggesting a network of lakes below the surface of Mars, scientists said Friday.
According to a study published in the Journal of Geophysical Research, the images taken by the NASA and ESA probes constitute the first geological evidence of the existence of this network of lakes beneath the surface of Mars.
Francisco Salizi, one of the scientists involved in the study, said the new discovery supported previous studies.
Others questioned the results, such as Jack Mostard, professor of geology at Brown University, claiming that the images showed no evidence of the lakes.
The importance of discovery is to support the hypothesis that the red planet has experienced conditions similar to the evolution of life on Earth.
