The first Arab country to appear in the ranking of “happiest countries of 2016” – in the list established by the “Earth Institute” of Columbia University, commissioned by the United Nations for the fourth year and comprising 157 country – was the United Arab Emirates, ranked 28. Palestine came in 108th place and Iraq in 112th, ahead of Egypt which ranks 120. As for Syria, it arrives at the penultimate place in the ranking (156).
Denmark is the happiest country in the world and Burundi is the saddest.

Internationally, Denmark maintained its position at the top of the “happiest countries” list for 2016, followed by Switzerland and Iceland. Fourth place went to Norway, followed by Finland, Canada and the Netherlands, while New Zealand came in eighth, followed by Australia and Sweden in tenth.
While the United States ranked 13th, while Germany ranked 16th, Great Britain ranked 23rd and France ranked 32nd. Spain placed 37th and Italy placed 50th.
Burundi is at the bottom (157th), Togo is 155th and Afghanistan is 154th.
The list was prepared on the basis of many factors including life expectancy, labor market situation, degree of corruption and GDP per capita.
The international community celebrates March 20 as the International Day of Happiness, after the United Nations, at its sixty-sixth session, adopted the day each year as the International Day of Happiness in recognition of the importance of striving for the happiness while defining public policy frameworks to achieve sustainable development, eradicate poverty and ensure prosperity for all people.
This day was decided on June 28, 2012 on the sidelines of the activities of the sixty-sixth session of the United Nations General Assembly entitled “Happiness, the well-being of society and the modern economic model”. Nations Ban Ki-moon said at the time that the world needs a new economic model that achieves parity between the three pillars of the economy: sustainable development, material and social well-being, individual security. and the environment help define what global happiness is.
