Health authorities in the Yemeni capital, Sanaa, reported 18 deaths from rabies and another 7000 Yemenis were infected with the disease in 2018.

The director general of epidemiological surveillance at the Huthi-controlled Ministry of Health and Population, Mohamed Adlan, said the total number of rabies cases had reached 6943 and 18 had died in 2018.

Rabies is a contagious viral disease that causes death as a result of the onset of clinical symptoms and is passed on to humans after being bitten or scraped.

The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) announced in late July that more than half of Yemen's health facilities were out of service because of the aftermath of the war.
