The Oscar-nominated “Juno” star announced that she is a transsexual and introduced herself as “Elliott Page” on a social media platform.
The Canadian-born actor, formerly known as Eileen Page, said he couldn’t “describe how awesome the feeling that I’m finally in love with what I’ve become to continue my normal life is “.
He wrote on Twitter: “I’m happy to be a transsexual.”
Page also used the post to address the issue of discrimination against transgender people.
The 33-year-old said: “The truth is that while I am now overjoyed and know how many privileges I have, I am also afraid. I am afraid of unwanted intrusions, hatred, ridicule and violence.
He added: “To be clear, I’m not looking to indulge myself in a happy time to celebrate, but I want to address the full picture. The statistics are incredible.”
Speaking to transgender people, Page said he will do whatever he can to change this world for the better.
And Paige, before crossing sexually, had gained international fame for starring in 2007’s “Juno”, in which he portrayed a pregnant teenager.
He has also appeared in other major films including “Initiation” and the “X-Men” series, while most recently he starred in the “Umbrella Academy” television series produced by Netflix.
Paige first appeared gay in 2014, when he told a Las Vegas audience, “I’m tired of hiding and I’m tired of lying while hiding.”
The actor, who is married to choreographer Emma Portner, has been a strong advocate for gay rights.
The actor was praised by many after making the news on Tuesday.
“Elliott Page gave us great on-screen characters and was an outspoken advocate for all gays,” said Nick Adams, media director for the transgender organization GLAD.
“He is now going to become an inspiration to so many transsexuals … all transsexuals deserve a chance to be like us, and accepting them today we are celebrating the wonderful Elliott Page.”
Netflix wrote a tweet in which it said, “Very proud of our superhero”.
