With global doubts about China’s classification as an investment market, Tesla CEO Elon Musk reiterated the electric carmaker’s commitment to China, saying, “Tesla will continue to expand its investments in the country”.

Musk’s comments came in the form of a pre-recorded question-and-answer session at the World Internet Conference, hosted by the China Cyberspace Administration.

Less than two weeks ago, Musk told the World Conference on New Energy Vehicles that Chinese automakers were “the most competitive in the world.”

“My frank observation is that China devotes a lot of resources and efforts to the implementation of the latest digital technologies in various industries, including the automotive industry, making China a global leader in digitization,” added Musk.

He pointed out that Tesla will continue to expand its investment and research and development efforts in China.

In his speech, Musk called for data protection, clarifying the types of data stored locally, following a campaign launched by China against Tesla, and a ban on its use by certain military personnel or its approach to military barracks.

“At Tesla, we are delighted to see that a number of laws and regulations have been passed to strengthen data management,” said Musk.

He continued, “Tesla has set up a data center in China to locate all data generated by our business here, including production, sales, service and shipping. All personally identifiable information is stored in China without being transferred abroad Only in very rare cases, for example, the data is approved Requests for spare parts from abroad to transport them internationally.

Tesla opened a major factory in Shanghai in 2019 and sold 44,264 Chinese-made cars in August, including 31,379 for export.
